The adrenal glands of both males and females produce such hormones that arouse the sebaceous glands to produce excessive sebum.

Although the sebum lubricates and protects the skin by getting secreted through openings in the skin, but dead skin cells near the openings get mixed with sebum and block the apertures. As a result, skin gets a build up of oil just under it and bacteria love it. They get in huge number in their favorite environment and inflame the tissues. Pimple is the result of this very inflammation if happens close to the skin surface. A whitehead is the result of the breakout of sebum onto the skin surface.
